Haven Oaks is a working farm and we are a mental health therapy practice. For your safety and the privacy of all of our clients, please do not come to the farm without a therapy appointment, wander the farm, or bring guests to sessions.

Unless your insurance requires it, you do not need a referral. If you’d like one sent, give your provider this referral form and ask them to email it to Assistant@AdirondackEAP.com. If you’d like to self-refer, please email Assistant@AdirondackEAP.com to inquire.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy information:

Clients who are interested in engaging in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy should inform their therapist upon initiating therapy. It is expected that all clients will engage with their therapist for several sessions to establish a healthy relationship prior to the therapist considering incorporating Barn Therapy (one-on-one therapy sessions, located in the barn or other area on the farm, that include a therapy horse and an equine specialist) into a client’s treatment plan.
Not all clients will be appropriate for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, nor will EAP be an appropriate intervention for all clients. AEAP retains sole rights to determine whether EAP will be included as part of a client’s treatment plan. As well, therapy sessions may be solely office-based or via remote means, depending on the client’s preference, as well as AEAP’s determination about how we can best meet the client’s therapy needs. EAP sessions may be terminated if a client is deemed to be inappropriate for one-on-one work with horses or if EAP sessions no longer are appropriate for a client’s treatment plan.
Working with large, powerful, live animals and multiple staff requires a lot of coordination and there may be circumstances beyond our control (weather, health-related issues, vet/farrier visits, farm-related issues, etc) that impact our ability to provide EAP sessions on a given day or time. Therefore, Barn Therapy sessions may not be available at the time of your session. We will do our best to inform you in advance of any changes to your sessions.
Barn Therapy sessions are scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and are scheduled around the horses’ feed times. Scheduling is available from 9a-3p. If Barn Therapy is appropriate to include in a client’s treatment plan, the therapist will determine the timing of the initial Barn Therapy session. Once the client is established with EAP sessions, they can schedule Barn Therapy sessions by following the guidelines listed at the top of the scheduling page in the Patient Portal.
When Barn Therapy sessions are not available, AEAP continues to offer a robust selection of therapeutic settings for clients to enjoy their mental health therapy sessions with their therapist, including remote therapy by phone and video, office-based therapy, and, if appropriate, Farm Therapy sessions where a client may walk-and-talk on our beautiful farm with their therapist and may interact with horses over the fence.
We offer mental health therapy that may include horses. We do not offer horse riding, riding lessons, horsemanship training, or other equine activities. All EAP sessions are designed with specific interventions to meet the individual client’s therapeutic needs. Therefore, one client’s experience may be different than another’s.
Offering horses for mental health clients is a very unique counseling experience that is not readily available elsewhere. EAP sessions are covered by insurance in exactly the same way that traditional office-based therapy is covered, and we proudly maintain a large farm with many horses that are often available for our clients’ benefit. We generously offer the privilege of interacting with our amazing horses to our clients and we do our very best to maintain a safe, supportive environment in which all clients will appropriately have their therapeutic needs met. We appreciate your flexibility and understanding regarding our ability to offer Equine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions to you/your child and we look forward to working with you.
Questions or concerns regarding Equine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions should be directed to your therapist while in session or to the Director, Shannon Brock, at Shannon@AdirondackEAP.com.

Contact information:

Please be aware that we work with clients throughout the day, and we also model a healthy work/life balance, so there may be a delay in our ability to respond to you.
